Tuscarora’s population was large enough to support two tongs. Yet its lore and that of the surrounding mining towns seldom refers to their Chinese residents. A combination of strange customs, religion, physical appearance and willingness to take on any task made them subjects of discrimination throughout the United States, but especially in the West where they competed for gold as well as jobs.
